The Department of Economics on the behest of a glorious past has set itself on the path of an ever-changing future by equipping the students with the knowledge of the latest trends in Economics. Movement towards this goal is aided by a team of Associate Professors and Assistant professors with specialization in varied fields of Economics. The students of the department learn the basic, advanced concepts and gain their quantitative knowledge in spacious classrooms aided by a well-equipped library.

The department believes in the holistic development of the students and has organized various competitions that would highlight the multifaceted nature of the students and also encourages and motivates students to participate in events organized by other colleges. The Department believes in grooming citizens to be ideal citizens and are encouraged to take part in extra - curricular activities. It is a matter of great pride that students of our department play a big role in keeping the campus green and clean.  The Citizen s Consumer Club of the college is handled by the Department that meticulously goes about the task of creating aware and intelligent consumers of the society. The faculty of the department have presented research papers at the National and International level  and have numerous publications in reputed journals to their credit. They also act as a resource person and given lectures in other educational institutions. The faculty of the Department have won awards for their expertise in teaching, research and outstanding achievement in extra curricular activities.

The study of Economics does not only empower a student and help her to be independent but also moulds her to be a reliable, resourceful and active citizen of the society and country.

History

Queen Mary’s College is the oldest Government women’s institution in Tamil Nadu catering to women’s higher education for nearly a Century. It was inaugurated in the year 1914 and initially the college offered intermediate course only. In the year 1916 Degree courses were introduced, thus began the journey of the Department of Economics.  To cater to an ever increasing demand shift II courses were added from the year 2007. The Post Graduation courses were started from the year 1980. The quest to be a research department began with the initiation of M. Phil Courses from 1993 and doctorate degree from 2017 onwards. 

          For over a century the Department has grown by leaps and bounds and still has miles to go in this path of educating and empowering the women of the future. The journey ahead shall be proceeded on by keeping the following vision and mission in mind.

Programme Outcome

              The outcome of the programmes in Economics would be to create an individual with deep and wide knowledge in various branches of Economics. The syllabus and mode of teaching would develop good communication skills through interactive classroom session and group discussion. The students will be inculcated with critical thinking that would encourage problem solving and builds analytical ability. The depth of the syllabi would encourage the quest for self learning and understand the application of theoretical framework in real life situations.
