About Department
Queen Mary’s College is an outstanding Educational Institution in promoting the educational background of women for the past 100 years. The college has celebrated its centenary celebrations in the year 2014.The Intermediate Music course was introduced in the year 1916. The college was the first Institution to start BA Music course in the year 1930. Further, MA Music was started in the year 1993. The Department is offering the Research studies M.Phil and Ph.D in Music from the year 2006 onwards. Thus, now the department is a full fledged Research department offering courses in Music starting from UG up to Research level. Now as we follow CBCS syllabus pattern, the Non Major Elective paper for UG students (for III and IV semesters) and Other Department Elective paper for PG students are also offered.
Thus apart from Music major students, the other department (both arts and science) students are also benefited by the Department of Music. Being a Research Department, all the Faculty members (including Guest Faculties) are with Ph.D Degree and contributing and presenting papers in Music Seminars, Workshops and Conferences in National and International level along with December Music season Conferences and programmes. Totally 39 Research Candidate has been awarded Ph.D in Music. Research Candidates R.Bhuvaneswari and Udayalakshmi received Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship from UGC during the year 2006 and 2009. Pradeesh Balan received UGC –JRF scholarship from UGC during the year 2012. Brinda Sabalingam and Brinda Raghavan completed their UG and PG with ICCR scholarship.

Vision

- i) Inter-mediate Course was introduced in 1928
- ii) Degree Course in Music was introduced in 1930 Further M.A., in 1993 and M.Phil., Ph.D., have also been offered since 2006.
The Department has been produced innumerable musicians- vocalists in the stream of classical as well as semi-classical, devotional, play-back and folk, instrumentalists, musicologists, music teachers in schools, academicians, media-experts viz. critics, news-readers etc.,
- Some of the Top-ranking musicians who have done Research- Ph.D in music deparment: Dr. Pushpavanam Kuppuswamy, Dr. Nerkunam Sankar, Dr, Sirkazhi Sivachidambaram, Prapancham Balachander, Dr.Trichy Murali, Dr.S. Srinivasan, Usha Rajagopalan, Guru Ragavendra, Dr. K.R.Ganesh , Dr.Jaya Mahadevan, V.Suresh(ghatam vidwan) and Dr. R.Kalakadu Srinivasan.
- Many Department alumni-s are Academicians, Head of the Departments, Principals, Teaching Faculties, Musicians, Journalists, Playback singers, Composers, Instrumentalists and in Media personalities. (College Principals and University Faculties and HOD-s) Dr.Ritha Rajan, Dr.M.Premeela, Dr.K.R.Seethalakshmi, Dr.E.Angayarkanni, Mrs. S.V.Mythili, Dr.Bharathi Mahadevan, Dr.Sister Margaret Bastin, Dr.R.Abhiramasundari, Dr.Rajshree, Dr.R.Hemalatha, Dr.G.Karpagam, Dr.Akkarai.M.Subhasree, Dr.Sheema and Mrs.Balambal,. Steffina Mary, Srimathi, Keerthana, Sivaranjani and many are placed in CBSC and Govt. Schools.
- Many physically challenged and visually challenged students are benefited by the Department and placed in Schools.
- To name a few classical Musicians - A.Kanyakumari, Charumathi Ramachandran, Dr.M.Narmada, Subhashini Parthasarathy, Kalpana Kishore,Vidya Kalyanaraman , Dr.Niranjana Srinivasan, Lavanya Sundararaman, S.J.Jananiy, Aishwarya Shankar, Deepa Vivekanandan to name a few musicians.
- Anuradha Sriram, Sunanda Raja, Meera Krishna, Jayalakshmi, Grace Karunas, Dr.G.Karpagam to name a few playback singers.
- Dr.Radha Baskar is running the ‘Samudhra’ Journal.
Mission
The focus of the Music department is always on the performance and research areas. Apart from that the students are encouraged to improve on the various skills which they are endowed with and thus they flourish and they become music teachers, music professors, self employed like taking classes, media people, performers, researchers, Institution heads, playback singers etc.

Programme Outcome
After completing B.A. and MA MUSIC programme, the student would be able to;
- Evolve as a performing artist and try to execute the knowledge studied in the basic level and to improve on the same like in both theory and practice of music and to pursue higher studies with the same interest.
- Availing the e sources and websites for enhancement of knowledge and to improve in performing capability.
- To improve in the communicate abilities and interaction, thinking for further research areas of various topics, to emerge with good academic background and confidence and develop civic sense as a responsible citizen.
UG PROGRAM OUTCOME (PO):
The outcome of the UG and PG program in Music would be to create an individual with the knowledge of the basic aspects of music in both practical and theory of music and also in allied arts like music in Folk arts, Harikatha and Bharathanatyam and Bhajana tradition. Further the academic atmosphere gives good chances of practicing the arts daily, and develop good communication skills through interactive classrooms sessions, group discussions and creative activities, and digitally familiarized through presentations, documentation, emailing and excel usage, motivated to solve problems and have a quest for latest topics of current trends and learning. The scope for improving the various abilities/skills and knowledge are available.
- The program also offers plentiful scope for students to pursue disciplinary cum systematic learning (PO1), enrich good communication skill to convey their ideas ,
- undergo comprehensive training in analyzing problems,
- motivated to learn through questions, e-quiz and updated topics ,
